The NGC (new general catalogue) description refers to IC 5146 (also known as Collinder 470) as a “cluster of 9.5 magnitude stars involved in a bright and dark nebula”. It can be found at the eastern end of the elongated dark cloud Barnard 168 and is part of an extended molecular cloud.
